The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, Third Judicial Department is seeking a LAN Administrator for its Technical Services Unit in Albany, NY. The position will be filled at one of three grade levels — Assistant LAN Administrator, LAN Administrator, or Senior LAN Administrator — depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. All three levels are Non-Competitive classification, meaning no civil service exam is required.

This is a hands-on IT infrastructure role supporting courtroom technology, enterprise networks, case management systems, and public-facing court applications across the Third Judicial Department.

Senior LAN Administrator
$84,659/yr

Requires: Network Administration certification within 18 months of appointment; AND one of the following:
  • 1 year of service in the LAN Administrator title; or
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related IT field + 2 years LAN operations experience; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Grade JG-21 · Non-Competitive
LAN Administrator
$76,112/yr
★ Mid level
Requires: Network Administration certification within 18 months of appointment; AND one of the following:
  • 1 year of service in the Assistant LAN Administrator title; or
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related IT field + 1 year LAN operations experience; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
Grade JG-18 · Non-Competitive
Assistant LAN Administrator
$64,971/yr
Entry level
Requires: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related information technology field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
⚠ Certification requirement: The LAN Administrator (JG-21) and Senior LAN Administrator (JG-23) roles require Network Administration certification — such as MCSA (Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate) or any Microsoft Administrator certification — within 18 months of appointment. Certification is not required at time of application.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will support a wide range of court technology systems and users across the Third Judicial Department. Core duties include:

Network & Infrastructure
  • Install, configure, and maintain desktops, laptops, peripherals, operating systems, and court software
  • Manage and maintain network infrastructure including switches, routers, wireless access points, servers, storage, and security devices
  • Monitor PC networks to ensure availability and performance for all users
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with hardware, software, mobile devices, printers, and telecommunications equipment
Court Applications & Systems
  • Support e-filing systems, public access/search tools, web portals, and case management systems
  • Manage user accounts, security configuration, documentation, and reporting
  • Maintain district-wide technology inventory and asset tracking
  • Provide multi-level technical support for internal and public-facing applications
Courtroom & Audio/Visual Support
  • Set up and troubleshoot courtroom audio/visual equipment and video conferencing systems
  • Support streaming, recording, video production, and webcasting of court proceedings
  • Provide on-site user audio/visual support for hearings and administrative functions
Administration & Leadership
  • Participate in department-wide technology initiatives and policy development
  • Evaluate technology needs and recommend improvements
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior IT staff
  • Travel as required — a valid New York State driver’s license is required for this position
