The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is actively accepting applications for Police Officer civil service exams through June 2026, with testing running through July 2026. Education & Experience Requirements

By the date of appointment, candidates must hold a four-year high school diploma (or equivalent) AND meet one of the following:

  • 24 college semester credits from an accredited college or university with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, OR
  • Two years of honorable full-time U.S. military service

Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Instructions are provided during the pre-employment screening process.

Age Requirements
  • Must be at least 17 years old on the date of the multiple-choice test.
  • Must be at least 20 years and 6 months old at the time of appointment.
  • Must be under 35 years old on the first day of the application period.
  • Military exception: Veterans may deduct up to 7 years of active duty service from their age.

Starting salary is $55,942 per year, with automatic increments reaching $109,352 after five and a half years. Additional compensation includes:

Additional Requirements
Residency

Officers must reside in New York City or in one of the following counties: Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland, or Putnam.

Driver’s License

A valid, unrestricted New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Citizenship

United States citizenship is required at the time of appointment.

Physical & Medical Testing

Candidates must pass a qualifying physical test, medical examination, and psychological evaluation. Drug screening is required prior to appointment, during Police Academy training, and at the end of probation. The NYPD enforces a strict zero-tolerance drug policy.
