The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is actively accepting applications for Police Officer civil service exams through June 2026, with testing running through July 2026. Application fees for the remaining exam numbers — 6318, 6319, 6320, 6321, and 6322 — have been fully waived. This is one of the most competitive entry-level law enforcement opportunities in New York State.
There are nine exam numbers in this series. The table below shows all dates — closed exams are marked, and active exams are highlighted in bold:

By the date of appointment, candidates must hold a four-year high school diploma (or equivalent) AND meet one of the following:
- ✓24 college semester credits from an accredited college or university with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, OR
- ✓Two years of honorable full-time U.S. military service
Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Instructions are provided during the pre-employment screening process.
- ✓Must be at least 17 years old on the date of the multiple-choice test.
- ✓Must be at least 20 years and 6 months old at the time of appointment.
- ✓Must be under 35 years old on the first day of the application period.
- ✓Military exception: Veterans may deduct up to 7 years of active duty service from their age.
Starting salary is $55,942 per year, with automatic increments reaching $109,352 after five and a half years. Additional compensation includes:

- ✓Holiday pay
- ✓City contributions to Welfare and Annuity Funds
- ✓City-paid health insurance
- ✓2.25% neighborhood policing differential on base salary
Officers must reside in New York City or in one of the following counties: Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland, or Putnam.
A valid, unrestricted New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
United States citizenship is required at the time of appointment.
Candidates must pass a qualifying physical test, medical examination, and psychological evaluation. Drug screening is required prior to appointment, during Police Academy training, and at the end of probation. The NYPD enforces a strict zero-tolerance drug policy.

- Arrest record indicating lack of moral character or disposition toward violence

Exam 6321 closes May 14, 2026. Exam 6322 closes June 15, 2026. No application fee required for either exam.
