Residency Requirement

Candidates must have been a legal resident for at least one month immediately preceding the date of the written test, and continuously until the date of appointment, in one of the following six counties:

ℹ️ White Plains Residency Preference: Preference in appointment may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the City of White Plains itself for at least one month immediately preceding the exam and continuously until appointment. Residency will be investigated and verified before appointment. All candidates will be fingerprinted.
Minimum Qualifications
Age requirement
  • Minimum age: Must be at least 20 years old to be certified as eligible for appointment.
  • Maximum age: Must not have reached 43 years of age as of the date of the written examination.
  • Military exception: Veterans may deduct up to 7 years of military duty (as defined in Section 243 of the Military Law) from their chronological age. Submit DD-214 with your application.
Education requirement

Applicants must hold one of the following:

  • A four-year High School diploma; or
  • A High School equivalency diploma (GED or TASC) issued by any U.S. state; or
  • A comparable diploma issued by any U.S. commonwealth, territory, possession, or the Canal Zone; or
  • A U.S. Armed Forces GED Certificate at the HS level.
ℹ️ Note: Applicants without a HS diploma or equivalency may take the exam, but will not be eligible for appointment until they obtain one. Foreign high school diplomas require a course-by-course evaluation — see the official announcement for approved evaluation services.
Driver’s license
  • Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License to be eligible for appointment.
Citizenship
  • US Citizenship is required for appointment. It is not required for admission to the examination.
What Police Officers Do — Job Duties
  • Enforce laws and ordinances in an assigned area during a specified shift
  • Protect the lives and property of residents and visitors in the City of White Plains
  • Work a rotating shift schedule, seven days a week, 52 weeks per year
  • Perform all related law enforcement work as required by the Department of Public Safety
