Option A — 3 years of full-time armed experience:

  • Three years of full-time experience as an armed armored car guard, armed security guard, armed peace officer, or armed military police officer; OR
  • Three years of full-time experience with NYC Transit as a Station Agent or Transit Property Protection Agent

Option B — Combined armed and unarmed experience:

  • At least 2 years of full-time armed experience (as described in Option A above), PLUS

  • Carry Business
  • Limited Carry Business
  • Carry Guard

ⓘ Part-time experience formula: If your experience was part-time (under 35 hrs/week), convert it using: (hours per week ÷ 35) × months worked.
Example: 21 hrs/week for 12 months = 21/35 × 12 = 7.2 months of qualifying experience.
How Your Score Is Calculated

There is no written test. Your score is based entirely on your qualifying experience. Meeting the minimum requirements earns a score of 70. Additional years of qualifying experience above the minimum earn bonus points:

Minimum qualifying
70
Meets base requirements
+1 year extra exp.
80
1 year but less than 2 additional years
+2 years extra exp.
90
2 years but less than 3 additional years
+3 or more years
100
Maximum score — 3+ additional years
ⓘ Important scoring rules: Experience used to meet the minimum requirements cannot also be used for bonus points. You receive a maximum of one year of credit for each year worked. Part-time experience is credited proportionally. Veterans’ Credit is available to eligible passing candidates — request it at time of application, before the eligible list is established.
Requirements at Time of Appointment
Handgun license

You must still possess a valid pistol permit at the time of appointment. At appointment, you will receive the NYC Transit endorsement for your pistol permit. This permit must be maintained for the duration of employment — failure to maintain it may result in termination.

How can I get the highest possible score?
The maximum score of 100 requires meeting the base requirements plus 3 or more additional years of qualifying experience. Each extra year above the minimum is worth 10 points. Experience used to meet the minimum cannot be double-counted for bonus points.
Do I need a handgun license before I apply?
Yes. You must already possess a valid handgun carry license (Carry Business, Limited Carry Business, Carry Guard, or Special Carry Guard) issued by the NYPD or a NYS jurisdiction, valid for carry in NYC, by the June 15, 2026 application deadline.
Do I need a CDL to apply?
Not to apply — but you will need a Class A or Class B CDL (or a learner’s permit for one) at the time of appointment. If you have a learner’s permit, you must obtain the full CDL within 60 days of being appointed or your employment will be terminated.
Does NYC Transit Station Agent experience count?
Yes. Three years of full-time experience as a NYC Transit Station Agent or Transit Property Protection Agent qualifies under Option A of the experience requirement.

If you previously tested positive or refused a drug/alcohol test while employed by a Federal DOT-regulated employer, you must have completed the full Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation, referral, and education/treatment process required by federal law before you can be appointed to this safety-sensitive position.
Do I need to live in New York City?
No. NYC residency is not required for this position.
I’m a retired public employee — should I check anything before applying?
