MTA New York City Transit is accepting applications for the Transit Property Protection Agent (Security Guard) exam, No. 6113. The application window is open from May 1 to May 31, 2026, with multiple-choice testing expected to begin Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Important: This is NOT a New York City Transit position and NOT a Civil Service position. It is an MTA position filled through a competitive exam process administered by MTA NYC Transit’s Examinations Unit. Candidates applying for both this exam (No. 6113) and the NYC Transit exam for the same title (Exam No. 6618) will take the multiple-choice test only once and may be placed on both employment lists if they pass and meet all requirements.

Salary & Pay Progression

Transit Property Protection Agents work a 40-hour work week. Starting pay is $23.85 per hour, rising to $34.08 per hour by the sixth year of service. Additional compensation includes night and weekend shift differentials.

How to Qualify — Education & Experience Requirements

Education requirements must be met by May 31, 2027. Experience requirements must be met by May 31, 2026 (last day of the application period).

Education requirement
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization
Experience requirement — 18 months total

You must have 18 months of full-time security work experience, of which at least 12 months must have been continuous with one employer. This experience must include at least two of the four following duties:

  • AConstant CCTV surveillance — performing closed-circuit television monitoring, including recognizing and reporting suspicious behavior
  • BPatrolling a large facility or grounds — including recognizing and reporting suspicious behavior
  • CInteracting with the general public — including confronting unauthorized personnel
  • DOperating surveillance and intrusion detection equipment
ⓘ Military experience counts: Military experience that matches the duties described above will be accepted toward the 18-month experience requirement.

Part-time experience formula: If your experience was part-time (under 35 hrs/week), convert it using: (hours per week ÷ 35) × months worked. Example: 21 hrs/week for 12 months = 21/35 × 12 = 7.2 months of qualifying experience.
Requirements at Time of Appointment
Driver’s license

A valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License with no disqualifying restrictions is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for the duration of employment. Serious moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may result in disqualification.

NYS Security Guard Registration Card

At the time of appointment, you must possess a New York State Security Guard Registration Card or show valid proof of filing for one (filed between the start of the application period and your appointment date). You must obtain the card by the end of your probationary period. Failure to secure this card will result in termination. The card must be maintained for the duration of employment as required under Article 7-A of the NYS General Business Law.

What Transit Property Protection Agents Do

Under supervision, Transit Property Protection Agents perform routine security work across MTA buildings, train yards, bus depots, and adjacent grounds:

  • Surveillance and monitoring of MTA facilities to identify suspicious behaviors and potential security threats
  • Prevent unauthorized persons, vehicles, or materials from entering or exiting MTA property
  • Maintain vehicle parking access control
  • Operate surveillance and intrusion detection equipment
  • Operate visitor management equipment
  • Drive a motor vehicle in the performance of duties
  • Prepare written incident and security reports
ⓘ Special working conditions: Agents may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Physical demands include standing for lengthy periods, walking over extended distances, climbing stairs, climbing onto trains and platforms, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
About the Exam — What’s Tested

The competitive multiple-choice test requires a score of at least 70% to pass. Your score determines your place on the eligible list. The test may be administered at a computer terminal or using paper and pencil. You cannot request a change to your assigned test date or location except under special circumstances.

Is this a civil service job?
No. This is NOT a Civil Service position and NOT a New York City Transit position. It is an MTA position. It is filled through a competitive exam process administered by MTA NYC Transit’s Examinations Unit, but it operates outside the traditional NYS civil service system.
What is the Education & Experience Exam and why does it matter?
The Education & Experience Exam (EEE) is a required part of your application where you detail your relevant work history and education in OASys. You must Final Submit it by midnight on May 31, 2026. If you do not Final Submit, your application is considered incomplete — you will not receive a score, will not be invited to further testing, and your fee will not be refunded.
What security experience qualifies?

Can I get a refund if I don’t qualify?
Generally no. The application fee is non-refundable. Under special circumstances a refund may be available — refer to DCAS General Exam Regulation E.3.4 or contact examsmakeups@nyct.com.
What if I miss my scheduled test date?
Make-up tests may be available if you miss your test due to specific circumstances: compulsory public appearance, on-the-job municipal injury or illness, death of a close family member (within one week), ordered military duty, a clear exam unit error, temporary disability, or pregnancy/childbirth.
