MTA New York City Transit is accepting applications for Collecting Agent, Exam No. 6619. Collecting Agents serve as armed revenue guards on armored trucks, collecting and transporting fare revenue from subway stations, bus depots, and MTA facilities across New York City. The application window is open from May 1 to June 15, 2026.
Unlike a written multiple-choice test, this exam is scored entirely based on your experience and license qualifications — the more qualifying experience you have beyond the minimum, the higher your score. Starting pay is $27.35 per hour ($56,888/yr), rising to $39.08 per hour ($81,286/yr) by year six.

Collecting Agents work a 40-hour work week. Starting pay is $27.35 per hour, rising to $39.08 per hour by the sixth year of service. Additional shift differentials apply for night and weekend work.

All requirements must be met by June 15, 2026 (last day of the application period). You must satisfy both an experience requirement and a license requirement.
Option A — 3 years of full-time armed experience:
- ✓Three years of full-time experience as an armed armored car guard, armed security guard, armed peace officer, or armed military police officer; OR
- ✓Three years of full-time experience with NYC Transit as a Station Agent or Transit Property Protection Agent
Option B — Combined armed and unarmed experience:
- ✓At least 2 years of full-time armed experience (as described in Option A above), PLUS
- ✓At least 2 additional years of full-time unarmed experience as an armored car guard, security guard, peace officer, military police officer, or comparable position
- Bail bond investigator
- Bodyguard
- Chauffeur
- Private investigator
By the last day of the application period, you must possess a valid handgun carry license in one of the following categories, issued by the NYPD or by a jurisdiction in New York State valid for carry in New York City:

Example: 21 hrs/week for 12 months = 21/35 × 12 = 7.2 months of qualifying experience.
There is no written test. Your score is based entirely on your qualifying experience. Meeting the minimum requirements earns a score of 70. Additional years of qualifying experience above the minimum earn bonus points:
You must still possess a valid pistol permit at the time of appointment. At appointment, you will receive the NYC Transit endorsement for your pistol permit. This permit must be maintained for the duration of employment — failure to maintain it may result in termination.
At appointment you must have one of the following:
- 1A valid Class A or Class B CDL in New York State with no air-brake restrictions and no disqualifying restrictions; OR
- 2A valid NYS Motor Vehicle Driver License plus a valid Learner Permit for a Class B CDL in New York State with no air-brake restrictions — in this case you must obtain a full Class B CDL within 60 days of appointment or your employment will be terminated.

- ✓Random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment (safety-sensitive DOT position)
- ✓If you have previously tested positive or refused a drug/alcohol test with a Federal DOT-regulated employer, you must have completed the required Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation and treatment process before appointment
- ✓Must be able to understand and be understood in English
- ✓Proof of identity and right to work in the United States required (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986)
- ✓NYC residency is not required
- ✓Must successfully complete a probationary period and any required training course
Under supervision, Collecting Agents perform armed revenue collection and security work across the MTA system:
- ✓Collect, transport, and deliver revenue and fare media from subway stations, elevated lines, surface lines, and other MTA agency locations to central revenue bureaus and banks
- ✓Stock MetroCard Vending Machines (MVM) and OMNY machines; provide security for MVM technicians
- ✓Serve as armed revenue guards on armored truck crews
- ✓Drive armored trucks on revenue collection routes
- ✓Complete forms, keep records, and prepare written reports
- ✓Lift and carry revenue bags and cash boxes; work as a crew member on armored trucks
