Transit Property Protection Agents work a 40-hour work week. Starting pay is $23.85 per hour, rising to $34.08 per hour by the sixth year of service. Additional compensation includes night and weekend shift differentials.

Education requirements must be met by May 31, 2027. Experience requirements must be met by May 31, 2026 (last day of the application period).
- ✓A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization
You must have 18 months of full-time security work experience, of which at least 12 months must have been continuous with one employer. This experience must include at least two of the four following duties:
- AConstant CCTV surveillance — performing closed-circuit television monitoring, including recognizing and reporting suspicious behavior
- BPatrolling a large facility or grounds — including recognizing and reporting suspicious behavior
- CInteracting with the general public — including confronting unauthorized personnel
- DOperating surveillance and intrusion detection equipment
Part-time experience formula: If your experience was part-time (under 35 hrs/week), convert it using: (hours per week ÷ 35) × months worked. Example: 21 hrs/week for 12 months = 21/35 × 12 = 7.2 months of qualifying experience.
A valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License with no disqualifying restrictions is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for the duration of employment. Serious moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may result in disqualification.
At the time of appointment, you must possess a New York State Security Guard Registration Card or show valid proof of filing for one (filed between the start of the application period and your appointment date). You must obtain the card by the end of your probationary period. Failure to secure this card will result in termination. The card must be maintained for the duration of employment as required under Article 7-A of the NYS General Business Law.

Under supervision, Transit Property Protection Agents perform routine security work across MTA buildings, train yards, bus depots, and adjacent grounds:
- ✓Surveillance and monitoring of MTA facilities to identify suspicious behaviors and potential security threats
- ✓Prevent unauthorized persons, vehicles, or materials from entering or exiting MTA property
- ✓Maintain vehicle parking access control
- ✓Operate surveillance and intrusion detection equipment
- ✓Operate visitor management equipment
- ✓Drive a motor vehicle in the performance of duties
- ✓Prepare written incident and security reports
The competitive multiple-choice test requires a score of at least 70% to pass. Your score determines your place on the eligible list. The test may be administered at a computer terminal or using paper and pencil. You cannot request a change to your assigned test date or location except under special circumstances.
