There are two assignment levels within the Inspector (Consumer and Worker Protection) title. Appointments are generally made to Assignment Level I. Employees may be assigned to the higher level at the discretion of the agency after appointment.

What the Job Involves — Inspector (Consumer and Worker Protection)

Inspectors (Consumer and Worker Protection) work under supervision, conducting inspections and regulatory investigations across New York City on behalf of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection. This is a field-based position that involves travel throughout the five boroughs.

Core inspection duties
  • Conduct or participate in inspections, investigations, surveys, and analyses related to the licensing of businesses and occupations
  • Inspect the sale and offering for sale of all commodities and services at every level of distribution and trade
  • Conduct or participate in regulatory investigations to identify and correct violations of municipal worker protection laws
  • Operate motor vehicles in the performance of assigned duties
Physical & working conditions
  • Stand for up to seven hours per day; walk up to five miles per day; climb stairs
  • Lift and/or carry equipment or items weighing up to 50 pounds independently; with assistance, up to 100 pounds for up to 100 feet
  • May be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
Education & Experience Requirements

You are responsible for confirming you qualify before submitting. If deemed “Not Qualified” your fee will not be refunded. Experience must be met by May 27, 2026. Education must be met by May 27, 2027. Candidates must meet one of the following three qualifying pathways:

Pathway 1 — HS Diploma + Inspection Experience
4-Year HS Diploma + 4 Years Experience
A four-year high school diploma (or educational equivalent) plus four years of full-time, satisfactory experience conducting investigations or inspections for a consumer or worker protection agency.
Pathway 2 — Bachelor’s Degree Only
Baccalaureate Degree from Accredited College
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university — in any field. No additional experience is required under this pathway.

Note: A high school diploma is still required for all candidates.
Pathway 3 — Equivalent Combination
HS Diploma + Combination of College & Experience
A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to Pathway 1. College education may be substituted for experience at the rate of 30 semester credits = 1 year of required experience.

All candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent — no exceptions.

Under NYC Administrative Code Section 12-120, you may need to become a resident of New York City within 90 days of appointment. Residency requirements vary by title and appointing agency — confirm with the personnel office at the time of your appointment interview.
