The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation is hiring 243 City Seasonal Aides / Security Guards for its Parks Security Service — patrolling parks, beaches, pools, and recreational facilities across all five boroughs. This is a non-competitive position with no civil service exam required. Pay is $19.14/hour with vacation and sick leave accrual and free rec center membership.

This is an excellent entry point into NYC government service, especially for those interested in a security or parks career. During employment, staff may have the opportunity to earn an 8-hour or 16-hour Security Certificate course — certifications that can be used to pursue a Security Guard License independently.

NYC Parks is the steward of over 30,000 acres of green open spaces across New York City — including parks, playgrounds, beaches, tennis courts, golf courses, and recreation centers. Members of the Parks Security Service work outdoors patrolling these facilities to promote proper use and enjoyment of parks.

• ✓Patrol parks, beaches, pools, and related facilities on foot to promote proper use and enjoyment
• ✓Advise patrons of park rules and regulations; greet visitors and help whenever possible
• ✓Conduct routine security patrols at beaches, pools, or regional parks in an outdoor field setting
• ✓Work outdoors in the field in all weather conditions across all five boroughs
• ✓Must be able to work holidays, weekends, and flexible shifts

During their time with the Urban Park Service, employees may have the opportunity to take the 8-hour and 16-hour Security Certificate course. These certifications can be used to help employees obtain their independent Security Guard License if they choose to pursue that career path.

There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. The following are the minimum requirements to be considered:

• ✓At least 18 years of age
• ✓Pass a background check
• ✓Able to work holidays, weekends, and flexible shifts
• ✓Good physical condition — this is an active outdoor position involving walking, standing, and patrolling

While not required, the following skills and qualifications will strengthen your application:

• +Valid New York State Driver’s License
• +High School Diploma and 60 or more college credits in Environmental Studies or Criminal Justice
• +Military experience
• +Related security experience

• ✓New employees (under 2 years city service): NYC residency required within 90 days of hire
• ✓Employees with over 2 years of city service: Residency required in NYC, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam, or Westchester counties
