Frequently Asked Questions
What is “Direct Hire Authority” and what does it mean for applicants?
Direct Hire Authority (DHA) means the VA can hire qualified candidates directly from the pool of applicants without going through a traditional competitive examination or ranked eligible list. This significantly speeds up the hiring process and means all U.S. citizens who meet the qualifications can be selected — not just those at the top of a long list.
What experience qualifies for this GS-6 position?
One full year of specialized law enforcement experience equivalent to GS-5 — including patrol, investigations, traffic control, crime prevention, arrests, and report writing. Security guard and corrections officer experience generally does not qualify. Your resume must clearly document job title, duties, start/end dates (month and year), and hours per week for all experience claimed.
Do I need a college degree?
No. There is no educational substitution at the GS-6 level — qualifying law enforcement experience is the only path. Military police, state/municipal police, and federal law enforcement experience all potentially qualify.
Where is the training and do I have to relocate?
All new VA Police Officers must attend an 8-week training course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. This is a mandatory condition of employment. After training, you return to your assigned duty location. A relocation incentive may be authorized for highly qualified candidates.
Which New York locations are hiring?
New York locations include: Albany, Batavia, Bath, Bronx, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Canandaigua, Montrose, New York City, Northport, Syracuse, and Wappingers Falls. Indicate your preferred location(s) when completing your USAJOBS application.
What is the salary for a VA Police Officer in New York?
The base GS-6 salary is $45,409–$98,335/yr before locality adjustment. New York City-area federal employees receive one of the highest locality pay adjustments in the country, which increases the actual salary significantly above the listed base rate. Check the USAJOBS listing for exact locality-adjusted figures for your preferred NY location.
Is this a union-represented position?
Yes. This position is represented by a union. Union representation provides additional protections and collective bargaining rights in addition to the federal civil service employment protections that all federal employees receive.
