This is a competitive civil service position (exam may be required) working directly with NYCHA residents to resolve tenancy issues, collect rent, conduct lease renewals, and ensure compliance with housing regulations. What Housing Assistants Do — Job Responsibilities
Housing Assistants work directly with NYCHA residents across Manhattan’s public housing developments. Assignments are made throughout the Borough of Manhattan.
Tenancy & resident services
1Assist in the resolution of tenancy problems; respond to resident complaints
2Interview residents; investigate and verify information obtained during interviews
3Inform tenants of Housing Authority rules, regulations, and requirements
4Attend administrative hearings and make court appearances on behalf of NYCHA

5Collect rent and rent arrears from residents
6Perform income and employment verifications for the purpose of rent determination
7Conduct field visits for rent collection, home visits regarding housekeeping concerns, window guard surveys, air conditioner surveys, and related inspections

Minimum Qualifications — Education & Experience
All candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent. Beyond that, qualify through one of the following four pathways:
Pathway 1 — Bachelor’s Degree
4-Year College Degree (Any Field)
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university — no additional experience required. This is the simplest qualifying path.
Pathway 2 — Associate Degree + Experience
Associate Degree (60 Credits) + 1 Year Housing Experience
An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college, plus one year of satisfactory full-time experience in housing management at a development with at least 150 apartments — performing any combination of: interviewing applicants, determining eligibility, gathering information to resolve complaints, collecting rents, and/or resolving tenant-related problems.
Pathway 3 — HS Diploma + 3 Years Experience
4-Year HS Diploma + 3 Years Housing Management Experience
A four-year high school diploma (or equivalent) plus three years of full-time satisfactory experience in housing management as described in Pathway 2 above.
Pathway 4 — Equivalent Combination
Satisfactory Combination of Education & Experience
A combination equivalent to Pathways 1–3 above. College education substitutes for experience at the rate of 30 semester credits = 1 year of experience. A four-year high school diploma or equivalent is required for all candidates under this pathway.
